The wines of First Colony are made in the traditional French-style by fourth generation French winemaker Jean-Michel Jussiaume. The first vintage produced was from the 2001 harvest, considered by most wine experts to be the best vintage on record in Virginia. Commenting on the harvest, Jussiaume says "For my first year in Virginia I had the benefit of the weather, which was very helpful for me as every place is different. It was an educational experience for me and I know now for next year what I will change." Working in various wine regions in France and around the world, Jussiaume certainly brings an extensive wine knowledge to First Colony.
