Bruce D Spiess MD

Bruce is a Professor of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Vice Chair for Research in Anesthesiology at the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL as well as adjunct professor of Physiology, Hematology and Emergency Medicine. Bruce and his wife, Heather moved to Gainesville in April 2016 but are still intimately involved in the oversight of the winery. Professionally, Bruce is responsible for patients undergoing heart surgery as well as other critically ill and trauma patients at the Shands/UF Medical Center. Since his anesthesia training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, he has been in active practice for over 30 years, much of the time in Washington State where he enjoyed the fabulous wines of the Pacific Northwest. His research is in areas of blood, critical oxygen delivery, coagulation and combat casualty care. His science entwines with the antioxidant properties of complex red wines in a number of unique ways. Although a scientist by training, Bruce has tremendous vision and enthusiasm for continuing to creatively grow First Colony as the first-rate Virginia winery it has become. His visions are large and long term.
